Welcome to Smith Farm Center for Healing and the Arts

Smith Farm Center for Healing and the Arts is a nonprofit health, education and creative arts organization that serves individuals, families and communities affected by cancer and other serious illnesses. Each year we serve more than 6,000 people in the Washington, DC area. Our work is grounded in a single profound idea: Each person has tremendous innate abilities to heal in the face of illness.

Illness and loss often open us up to the life of the soul and create an opportunity for healing to take place. Healing is an inner process that can take place at the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. Even in the absence of a cure, healing is always possible. And when healing occurs, it has a transformative effect that improves quality of life and often has an impact on survival.

Smith Farm Center for Healing and the Arts aims to provide comfort, community, resources and hope to those affected by illness. We believe that each individual deserves the best conventional medical treatment as well as complementary and mind/body approaches to health.

Every person carries enormous internal wisdom and many resources that can be rallied in their own support. Since our founding in 1996, our programs, retreats and services have positively transformed the experiences of people living with cancer and other illnesses, and have given strong support their caregivers, families, friends and medical practitioners.

Our Programs

[SFC Retreat Location]

Cancer Help Program Retreat Site

Smith Farm Center's retreats and programs offer choices in healing, provide emotional support, enhance living, and complement mainstream medical care. Our programs are small in size, experiential, and held in beautiful settings. In addition, our city location allows you to easily integrate the programs into your weekly schedule. Our facilitators include noted experts in the health field, and the topics on which we focus are time-tested wellness techniques, such as health supportive diet and nutrition, exercise and stress reduction. We also offer an on-site public library focused on cancer and integrative care. Visit the Retreats & Programs page for information on upcoming events.

In addition to retreats and programs at our Center, we also provide resources in the Washington, DC community at large. Our hospital-based Artist-in-Residence programs engage patients in creative arts activities as part of the healing process through the visual arts, creative writing, storytelling, music, creative movement, and guided imagery. Also, by training breast cancer survivors as Patient Navigators, Smith Farm offers individual counseling and education to improve access to care and enhance the treatment experience of underserved communities. Patient Navigators guide cancer patients through treatment while offering psychosocial support to individuals and their families.

We invite you to call or stop by our Washington, DC Center to learn more about our programs and resources and to visit our Healing Arts Gallery.
